How to Clean Your Ring at Home: Silver, Gold and Platinum
A five-minute clean every few weeks keeps moissanite and diamonds blazing and metal gleaming. Here is the safe method we recommend for every Aura piece, whether it is rhodium-plated sterling silver, solid gold or platinum.
What you need
A bowl of warm (not hot) water, a few drops of mild dishwashing liquid, a soft baby toothbrush and a lint-free cloth. That is the entire kit. You do not need ultrasonic cleaners or harsh dips, and some of them can actually cause harm.
The five-minute method
Soak the ring in the soapy water for ten to fifteen minutes to loosen oils and lotion residue. Brush gently around the stone and under the setting, where grime hides and blocks light. Rinse in clean water with the drain plugged, then pat dry and buff with the cloth. That underside step matters most: a stone sparkles because light passes through it, and a film of hand cream underneath is usually why rings go dull.
What to avoid
Keep every ring away from chlorine, bleach, acetone and abrasive cleaners, which can pit metal and accelerate tarnish. Avoid toothpaste and baking soda, which scratch precious metal. For rhodium-plated silver, skip silver polish and dips entirely: the plating is what gives the bright white finish, and polish is designed to strip surface layers.
How often?
A quick clean every two to three weeks for daily-wear rings, and a gentle wipe with a soft cloth after wearing. Take rings off for the gym, gardening, swimming, cleaning and sleeping, and store them in the pouch or box they arrived in.
