The 4Cs of Diamonds Explained: Cut, Colour, Clarity and Carat
Every diamond is graded on four qualities: cut, colour, clarity and carat. Understanding them takes five minutes and can save you thousands, because not all four deserve equal shares of your budget.
Cut: the one that matters most
Cut measures how well the diamond's facets are proportioned and angled, and it controls sparkle more than anything else. A perfectly white, flawless diamond with a poor cut looks dull; a well-cut stone dances with light. Our advice is simple: never compromise on cut.
Colour: whiter is rarer
Colour grades run from D, completely colourless, down through the alphabet as warmth increases. The difference between neighbouring grades is nearly invisible to the untrained eye, especially once a stone is set. D to F is colourless; G to H looks white to virtually everyone while costing meaningfully less.
Clarity: invisible is enough
Clarity grades describe tiny internal characteristics formed as the diamond grew. The key threshold is "eye-clean": if no inclusion is visible without magnification, a higher grade only changes the certificate, not the ring. VS1 and VS2 stones are typically excellent value for this reason.
Carat: weight, not size
Carat measures weight, and visual size depends heavily on shape. Elongated shapes like oval, pear and marquise show more face-up surface per carat than round, which is one reason ovals are so popular right now. Filter our lab diamond rings by stone shape to compare.
How to spend wisely
Prioritise cut, sit one or two grades below the top on colour and clarity where the eye cannot tell the difference, and put the savings into carat or the setting. Every certified diamond we sell carries its IGI grading documentation, so all four Cs are independently verified. Unsure how to balance them?
