IGI vs GIA: Diamond Certification Explained Simply

A diamond certificate is the independent document that proves what you are buying. Here is how certification works and what the letters mean.

What a certificate actually is

A grading report is issued by an independent gemmological laboratory with no stake in the sale. Trained gemmologists assess the stone's cut, colour, clarity and carat weight under controlled conditions and document the results, usually with a report number that can be verified online, and often laser-inscribed on the diamond's girdle. It turns a jeweller's claims into verified facts.

IGI and GIA

The two names you will meet most are IGI, the International Gemological Institute, and GIA, the Gemological Institute of America. Both are respected global laboratories. GIA wrote the original 4Cs grading language and is historically the benchmark for mined diamonds. IGI grades enormous volumes of stones worldwide and became the leading certifier of lab-grown diamonds, with detailed reports covering the full 4Cs. For lab-grown stones, IGI certification is the established industry standard, which is why every certified lab diamond we sell carries IGI documentation. For custom projects with natural diamonds, we work with GIA-certified stones.

How to read your report

Check four things: the cut grade (aim for Excellent or Very Good, as we explain in our 4Cs guide), the colour and clarity grades, the carat weight, and that the report number matches the inscription or paperwork supplied.
